Violence, memory and reconciliation: truth as a field of conflict between science and democracy
Rarely before have democracy and the rule of law been under such pressure as they are today. Its existential crisis is also and above all a crisis of the meaning and function of truth and trust in society, as well as a politics that opportunistically asserts alternative truths and thus distances itself from the claim to operate on the basis of facts. As a systematic search for truth, science and research have a key role to play in this crisis. Science may flourish and prosper in democratically constituted, freedom-guaranteeing constitutional states, but it is not itself democratically constituted:
Scientific discourses are radically more open than political discourses and yet do not accept everything that meets with high approval.
The conference will deal in an exemplary manner with the question of truth in the relationship between testimony and the culture of remembrance, in the identification and documentation of violence in conflicts and with the handling of truth in post-conflict situations (transitional justice).
